Note for the file: Human Resource Plan for Reptiles Farm Ltd.
From: Mushtaq Ahmed, Managing Director & CEO

RFL started its operation with three staff members in March 2004. In May 2005 the company received
government approval and in December 2005 received its first batch of 75 crocodiles. Now it is a home to
54 breeders and 710 hatchlings. From mare three staff members RFL had thirteen staff members highest
in 2006 when we had 61 breeders only. Now we have eight staff members (including driver and cook) to
look after 54 breeders and 710 hatchlings. In other words every single day staff members have to
prepare 75 kgs of minced meat, offer feed to hatchlings and clean the hatchery. In three months time
we are expecting another 450 hatchlings to add our stock. Apart from that every single day the
hatchlings are growing and feed intake is increasing.
Due to logistical problem, one staff member has to remain busy every other day to collect chicken heads
from Tongi. Which leaves us with only two support-staff to carry out “the basic husbandry operation” of
baby crocodiles. This is becoming increasingly difficult. Every year during monsoon in four months
maintaining grass of 15 acres of land is impossible. These days finding day labours are becoming difficult.
Even if we can manage someone we have to pay Tk. 300 per day (it was Tk. 60 when we started in 2004).
The reality is within five kilometer radius of RFL at Uthura there are new companies that came up and
created job of more than five hundred unskilled and semi skilled labours. Their entry level salary is 25%
higher than our skilled labours with five years of experience. Within half an hour’s tempo ride there are
thousands of new jobs in industries those came up in last few years. The biggest blow is from new
entrants in the crocodile industry. They have already grabbed our two former staff members and rest
will follow soon if we do not take proper measures and implement a correct Human Recourse Policy.
After export last month when our motivation level should have been highest, it seems to be at the
lowest point. As in 2007 when the first batch of hatchlings were born, management declared a bonus for
their achievement and at the same time also declared after first batch of export- there will be another
bonus. Last salary review was done in July 2008. It is already unbearable for the staff members to
survive with family, they requested many times to review their salary matching their daily minimum
necessity. All of them are now soaked in debts up-to neck. As Managing Director had no option but to
declare that whatever the reviewed salary would be, that would effect from January 2010. After export
they had expected a salary raise matching their dedication- as we could not provide it yet, the Board of
Directors should immediately consider it. An analysis of our salary of each staff members and number of
crocodiles had been attached with annexure-I.
The Board will have to decide immediately the following issues:
1. Review the salary with effect from January 2010.
2. Appointment of Manager or conform Mofizul Islam as Manager who is currently serving as
Acting Manager for last one year successfully. Reptiles Farm is known entity today and many
enquiries from government officials, local administration and other curious visitors has to be
dealt these days. Mafizul Islam is the only staff member who had been with the company since
beginning. After eight years into business we should establish a proper corporate culture. A
Manager must have proper policy and program to implement with absolute authority.
3. Appointment of Accounts Officer: Since March 2010, there had been no accountant. There for
proper book keeping is not possible.
4. Appointment of three more support staff.
